RoC Title To Be Decided At Five Mile Point Oct. 14

10/03/06 – KIRKWOOD, NY…The traditional National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend is one of the longest traditions in short track racing and this year the event title certainly holds true. This year will mark the 36th running of the Southern Tier 100 at the famed quarter mile oval. Qualifying for the scheduled 100 lap event will take place at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 14th.

The Southern Tier 100 has been a long standing tradition in northeast short track racing. This year will be the 36th edition of what has been a very storied event. The Southern Tier 100 will pay $5,000 to the winner of the Big Block/Small Block Modified special. In addition to the prestige of winning this event the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour Championship will be up for grabs. This is the final point race in the very successful dirt series.

Entering the event Mitch Gibbs leads Alan Johnson by only two markers in another very close battle for the R.o.C Championship. Last year Gibbs and Bobby Varin capitalized on heat victories at this event to score five bonus points each. The final outcome of the Race of Champions point race in 2005 – A tie between Gibbs and Varin.

This year Gibbs is hoping to erase any potential of a tie as he looks to wrap up his second consecutive Race of Champions dirt title. Gibbs started the 2006 R.o.C tour off right by winning the April 8th Ice Jam at Fonda Speedway. Gibbs also notched another Five Mile Point Speedway Track Championship again this season. The North Norwich, New York driver has also won the Southern Tier 100 in 2002 and 2004.

For Alan Johnson Five Mile Point Speedway has been a tough speedway to tame. He has always run consistent at the quarter mile but has never been considered dominant. He has one Southern Tier 100 victory back in 1982. Earlier this season Johnson recorded the victory in the Race of Champions North Region event at Five Mile Point Speedway. Johnson, from Phelps, New York has been one of the most dominate drivers throughout the northeast this season and has the rare distinction of possibly being crowned both the Race of Champions Dirt Series Champion and Super DIRT Series Champion in 2006. Will Gibbs be able to fend off Alan Johnson for the title? Not if R.o.C Tour third place point setter Jerry Higbie has anything to say.

Higbie, is the 2005 358 Modified Track Champion at the Orange County Fair Speedway and has been impressive in his two 2006 Five Mile Point Speedway starts. Higbie has always taken a liking to the wide quarter mile oval and is looking for that first elusive win at Five Mile Point Speedway.

The 36th edition of the Southern Tier 100 is shaping up to be the best one yet. A huge field of the top Big Block/Small Block Modified drivers are expected to converge on the quarter mile oval. The 100 lap race winner will earn $5,000. Also on the card will be the series finale for the Trackside Products Super Stock Series(30) and the IMCA Modified Empire State Series 30 lapper.
