By JR KENNERUP
BINGHAMTON, NY - With the snow now almost gone from many areas the racing bug is beginning to set in. Officials from the Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modified Tour and the Selinsgrove Speedway met recently to discuss the rules that will be the law of the land come Friday March 19th and Saturday March 20th at the Selinsgrove Speedway.
"We will pretty much basically follow the same rules that we used last year with a couple of changes," said Joe Kaminski, Jr. of JGK Motorsports and the Selinsgrove Speedway.
"Because we’re drawing many cars from many different areas of the country all of their rules are not the same. So we have to have a common ground to go from, last year was pretty good and this year we’re clamping down on one item that could have slipped by us last year. The other change is a common sense one and should make it easier for all teams who compete during both shows on the weekend."
For the Friday night March 19th show for 358 Modifieds. All cars must weigh 2,350 pounds after the race with no tolerance. The cubic inch limit will be 361 cubic inches and the engine compression will be no more than 10.5:1. The top five cars at the end of the feature will be checked for engine displacement and compression.
Cars on Friday using Brodix Spec Heads with a non ported cast iron head will be allowed to use racing gas or racing methanol and can use either a 650 or 750 cfm carburetor.
Cars using an open cast iron head on Friday must use racing gas only and can only use a 650 cfm carburetor.
For Friday night no cars using a SB2 Head will be allowed.
American Racer Tires (13 x 92 only) are the only tire allowed all weekend long, the tire rule is the same for both shows. Any American Racer compound is allowed on the left front, only a 38 compound will be allowed on the right front. Only a 44 compound will be allowed on the left rear while a 44, 48, or 50 compound is legal on the right rear.
For the Saturday March 20th show normal Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modified Tour rules will be followed. Meaning any car powered by an engine over 361 cubic inches will have to weigh 2,500 pounds after the race with no tolerance. Any car using an SB 2 Head on Saturday will have to weigh 2,500 pounds.
Small Block Modifieds are welcomed to compete on Saturday as they race for a $500 Dart Machinery Small Block Bonus. These cars will be given a 150 pound weigh break, meaning they will have to weigh 2,350 pounds after the race with no tolerance.
"We were extremely pleased with last year’s race program and the rules package that was in place," stated RoC Administrative Director Andrew Harpell.
"The rules provided a very equal footing for all teams from all over the northeast and this year will be no different. The RoC Icebreaker event in just two years has become one of the most popular events of the entire racing season."
Questions on the rules package for the weekend can be answered by calling tech inspector Harvey Ensminger at 570-617 -5816, Joe Kaminski Jr. at 570-274-0404, or RoC at 607-775-5555.
