01/03/10 -
BINGHAMTON, NY…The 2010 Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modified Tour Schedule will again be comprised of nine events between the states of New York and Pennsylvania. For the first time Grandview Speedway will be the site of a RoC Tour event for both the Modified and Sportsman on Wednesday, July 14th.
The 2010 trail will get underway on March 19th and 20th with the third running of the Icebreaker at Selinsgrove Speedway.
The unique two day format utilized at Selinsgrove Speedway was a huge success in 2009. On Friday, March 19th the 358 Small Block teams will compete in a 25 lap event. On Saturday, the Big Block Modifieds will tackle the lightning fast speedway with the 50 lap winner earning a minimum of $4,000. With bonus money, a weekend sweep could net a driver more than $11,000. For teams following the series a driver’s best finish over the two days will be tallied toward the RoC Dart Dirt point standings. This will put the small block teams on equal footing with the big block teams in the standings.
Utica Rome Speedway will host event number two on Sunday, May 9th. The annual Mother’s Day event dubbed the Dart Machinery “Victoria 200” will pay $10,000 to the winner with $1,000 being paid to take the green. This race has emerged as a must see event each season on the RoC Dart Dirt Tour.
Penn Can Speedway will host the first of two events on Tuesday, June 8th with the second set to take place on Tuesday, August 10th. Both races will be co-promoted by Short Track Supernationals promoter Brett Deyo and Penn Can Speedway track operators Al Wilcox and Reed Miller. The first event named “the Clash at the Can” will be 60 laps and pay a minimum of $4,000 to win with that tally potentially growing to well over $5,000 with bonus money up for grabs. The August 10th event, annual titled the “Hot Summer Nights Special” will again be 60 laps with another great pay day for the teams.
Five Mile Point Speedway will celebrate its 60th consecutive year of racing with a 60 lap RoC Modified event on Wednesday, July 7th. The 60 lapper will pay $6,000 to win along with a $500 bonus to the top finishing small block driver. The 2010 title chase will conclude at Five Mile Point Speedway with the 41st edition of the Southern Tier 100 on Saturday, October 30th.
Grandview Speedway will host a RoC Modified and Sportsman event for the first time on Wednesday, July 14th. The Modified portion of the show will pit the best weekly drivers against the invaders in a 60 lap event. The event will be part of the blockbuster “Thunder on the Hill Series” that Bob Miller and speedway owner Bruce Rogers co-promote each summer.
With the addition of Grandview Speedway to the tour some of the top southern teams will now have an event at their “home facility”. This will certainly lead to a very level playing field in 2010. The Grandview teams compete weekly on the American Racer tire that the RoC Tour utilizes so the track regulars will be able to compete without changes. Defending Grandview Speedway Champion Jeff Strunk has had success on the RoC Dart Dirt Tour and will be looking to utilize his home track event to vault him in the 2010 standings. Strunk was the 2005 Race of Champions Dirt Southern Region Champion.
The popular Accord Speedway will host the first of two combination events in the fall with the annual running of the “King of the Catskills” on Friday, September 24th. The facility has undergone major renovations under the ownership of Gary and Donna Palmer. The “King of the Catskills” race always has a big role in the outcome of the final RoC Dart Dirt standings. The 2009 edition of this race saw Brett Hearn leading the tour standings entering the event but Pat Ward rallied to a strong finish and overtook the point lead en route to his third straight RoC title.
RoC Tour Administrator Andrew Harpell commented, “We are very excited about our 2010 schedule as it is very driver friendly.” He added, “The addition of the Grandview Speedway event will open the door for their weekly drivers to compete for the overall title this season.”
The 2010 tour will see even more money up for
grabs for the participating race teams in what can be called a very “driver friendly” schedule. At least four of the events will have increased winners shares while running less laps. The majority of the races have no scheduling conflicts which will again provide the best talent in racing for the fans in attendance.
This year will mark the sixth season for the RoC Dart Dirt Tour. Pat Ward is coming off of his third consecutive tour championship and it has been against some of the best competition in racing. Last season 195 different drivers competed in at least one RoC Dart Dirt Modified Tour event. Alan Johnson was the overall tour champion in 2006 and Mitch Gibbs and Bobby Varin tied for the inaugural title in 2005. All of the past champions have impressive racing resumes.
Both the RoC Dart Dirt Sportsman and Pure Stock Tour schedules will be announced very shortly with the finishing touches being put in place.
