Penn-Can King of the Can Weekend Oct. 23-24

10/07/09 - SUSQUEHANNA, PA - The rescheduled King of the Can Weekend at Penn Can Speedway set for Friday and Saturday October 23rd and 24th has been set. Co- promoters Al Wilcox and Reed Miller have been looking at this weekend with great anticipation since the rescheduled dates were announced. This weekend event is shaping up to be a must see event with many of the top area race teams indicating they will be in the field for the event.

The featured event of the weekend will be the modified “King of the Can” feature event scheduled for Saturday October 24th. The modifieds will compete in a sixth lap feature event with $5000 going to the winner. Fifth place will be worth $1000 with $500 for the tenth finishing spot. The race will be the second of three combination races for the Race of Champions modified tour. The first combo event at the Accord Speedway was won by Jerry Higbie. Earlier in the year Higbie picked up a guaranteed starting position in the Penn Can event and has indicated that he is excited about returning to Penn Can now that he has a motor program suited to the speedway. The winner of the “King of the Can” will also earn a guaranteed starting position in the third combo event at the Five Mile Point Speedway the next weekend. Going into the second combination event defending series champion Pat Ward has a slim lead over Danny Johnson, and Brian Weaver.

The first ROC event at Penn Can attracted a stellar field of modifieds with speedway champion Jeff Rudalavage winning a hard fought battle after Mike Gular after Gular’s car ran short of fuel with only one lap remaining.

Gular will return to try and make up for the disappointment. Other top Penn Can runners including Mike Colsten, Allan Rudalavage, Craig Terrell, Brett and Garth Tonkin, Danny Creedan, Butch Tittle, and a host of others will be on hand to defend home turf. Duane Howard is the defending champion of the event and is expected to be in the field. Other early entrants include the two car team fielded by Ken Brewer with Mitch Gibbs and Scott Brady at the controls. Redline star Brian Malcohm has indicated he will be in the field along with northern runner Bob Henry who had previous success running the event. Bobby Trapper of Scranton will also be in the pits looking for a win at his former home track.

The Race of Champions Sportsman series will also be in competition Saturday with a big fifty lap feature event. The race will pay the winner a handsome $1200 with $100 to take the green. This fifty lap feature should draw a large field of sportsman with many of the southern Pennsylvania teams joining the Penn Can and ROC regulars to contest for the top price.

“We are excited about this ROC Sportsman event,” states Miller. “ROC rules are such that many sportsman teams can come to Penn Can to compete. We look for a great field of cars coming for the race.

The two day weekend will feature Friday night racing with a special crate sportsman event. The 602 crate sportsman will run a thirty five lap event with $1000 going to the winner. The top three cars will be guaranteed starters in the Race of Champions sportsman series race the next night. They will be given the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth spots if they do not qualify better through their heat races. The Trackside Products Pure Stock Tour will also be in competition during the weekend competing in a twenty five lap feature event. Joining the crate sportsman and pure stocks will be the Xcel 600 modifieds, and the four cylinders running a special thirty five lap feature event.

Gates for the Friday program will open at 5:00 with racing a 7:15. The Saturday event will see the gates opening at 1:00 with the first heat scheduled to take the green at 4:00. The speedway is located on Route 171 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania just a short drive from the Binghamton and Scranton areas.
