09/23/09 -
ACCORD, NY - Working rigorously under the fall skies that settle over the Catskill Mountains, Accord Speedway Promoter Gary Palmer is putting the finishes touches on his pristine quarter mile hot spot in preparation for the biggest event of the season at his Ulster County speedplant. Coming off a frustrating season due to the unwillingness of Mother Nature to cooperate to the tune of 12-rainouts, the weekend will be only the second time in the history of the Palmer-era a two day event will take place at the speedway. While last year's first edition of the two day show was tremendous, all indications will have the 2009 far surpassing the record breaking event from a year ago. September 25th and 26th will mark the return of the prestigious King of the Catskills weekend at the Accord Speedway and the spectacular two day event has something special to offer for all racing fans for the unique eight division two day weekend event sponsored by Bill Rumsey and his WLR Construction Team..
The Friday portion will usher in the return of the ROC Dirt Modified Tour with all of the traveling ROC stars locking horns with the talented roster of Accord drivers who will defend the home turf in a 100-lap feature event that will have a 50-lap fuel stop and waiting at the end of the final checkered flag will be $6,000.00, the biggest paying event on the ROC Tour.
Current ROC Tour point leader Brett Hearn will lead the charge into the tough Accord race arena and he will have in tow last year's ROC champion Pat Ward, Matt Sheppard, Danny Johnson, Stewart Friesen, Brian Weaver, Billy Van Pelt, Mike Colsten and a host of many talented ROC drivers seeking to take home a big slice of the Accord pie. Hearn has a slight seven point lead in the latest ROC point's update and with three events remaining on the ROC schedule, the ability to score big in the final events will dictate the champion for the 2009 series.
The Accord Speedway's 2009 Rhinebeck Ford Modified Champion Jerry Higbie will lead the parade of Accord drivers who will defend the home turf in the spectacular shootout and he will have a great militia beside him with 2008 Champion Andy Bachetti, Mike Ricci, Kevin Duryea, Bobby Trapper, Scott Ferrier and many more as the Accord regulars will work hard at keeping the big bucks on the line in-house. Late season additions to the speedway, Brian Malcolm and Russ Zimmerman from the defunct Redline Raceway, Rick Holsten and Sean Gunther from the Garden State and the reinstatement of Jamie Yannone back to the speedway, has added great depth to an already talented group of Accord regulars.
The phone lines at the speedway are at warp speed as more and more drivers have been alerting the Accord Speedway staff of thier intent to be a part of the weekend activities. From the Garden State, racing legend Billy Pauch Sr and his son Billy Jr have announced their intentions to be part of the weekend and from the Keystone State, Grandview track champion Jeff Strunk, and former Penn Can champion Mike Gular, Joey Grammes and Ricky Yetter have filed entries for the event.
The Pro Stock division is a staple for the Friday night line-up and recently crowned champion Jon Routhier from Cannan, Connecticut will be part of the solid roster of Accord drivers who make up the division. Pat Zimmer, Charlie Schwartz, Don Williams, John Roese, Torin Betterton and Mike Garaguso add the depth to a division that has remained rock solid in the past history of the speedway. With many speedways having already closed down for the season, it is anticipated some outside invaders will try their luck at the race to the walls facility.
The Regular Slingshots and the Junior Slingshots will complete the Friday night portion of the program and the interest has been high from many of the stars in the Slingshot divisions to try their hand at the Accord high banks. New York stars Kyle Van Duser, Richie Van Orden, Joe Kata, RJ Smykla, Charlie Lawerence, Anthony Perrego and Kayla Smykla are expected in for the event while Jimmy Babb, Joe Malson and John Leiby Jr will fly the New Jersey flag at the event. Pennsylvania will counter with Ricky Yetter, Cait and Molly Chambers and a host of others expected in for the event.
The Junior Slingshots will be showcased on Friday evening for the first time and the anticipated standing room only crowd will have the opportunity to witness the "Stars of Tomorrow" performing for them as they seek notoriety in the world of motorsports. Accord Speedway champion and seven time winner Jesse Leiby will lead the parade of Juniors who have put on tremendous shows all season long as part of the Midweek Madness program. Three time winner Tyler Dippel and two time victor Mathew Gaughan are expected in for the event and the entries have been arriving daily from many of the Junior stars such as Rick Raisner, Dylan Martin, Rosalyn Trautschold, Michelle Campbell, Chris Kurtz, Cole Hentschel, Tommy Zwart, Chris Lysogorski and Bobby Flood.
