07/24/09 -
VERNON, NY - On a night honoring one of the all time great drivers, Bill Wimble, Bobby Varin out of Sharon Springs, NY continued to write his own history as he parked his Dover Brake No.00 in victory lane. The 50 lap Race Of Champions Dart Dirt Series paid $ 5,000 to the winner.
Matt Sheppard out raced Bobby Varin to lead the opening lap of the 50 lap modified feature with the first yellow flag flying on lap 2 as Larry Wight would slow on the front straight. Wight would be pushed to the pits ending his night early.
On the restart Sheppard was looked like he was shot out of a cannon as he quickly built up a half a straightaway lead on the field and with 5 laps in the books, Sheppard still led by a wide margin with Varin running alone in second. Stewart Friesen, Willy Decker and Ronnie Johnson fought for top-five spots.
When the lap counter hit lap10 Sheppard and Varin ran alone out front, Pat Ward moved to third as Willy Decker and Friesen still showed in the top-five.
Five laps later Sheppard once again led by a half a straightaway as he started to catch the back of the pack. Varin started to reel in the leader as Friesen, Ward and Billy Decker were still a factor fo r the win.
On lap 20 Varin erased Sheppard’s lead as he drew in on the leader’s bumper in lapped traffic.
At the halfway point Sheppard and Varin ran nose to tail, Friesen ran alone in third as teammates Ward and Decker ran fourth and fifth.
Just as Varin pulled alongside of Sheppard the yellow would fly for Danny Varin who went off the track in turn four. On the restart this time Sheppard wouldn’t pull away like on other restarts as Varin kept pace with the leader.
After hounding Sheppard, Varin saw the opening he needed. Exiting turn two Sheppard slid off the bottom groove he used all race long. That allowed Varin to blast by Sheppard to be scored the new leader on lap 29. Friesen would also get by Sheppard to take over the runner-up spot.
One lap later Friesen using the top drove around Varin into the race lead. That lead would be short lived as Varin fought back on the bottom retaking the lead.
A late yellow would tighten up the field for a shoot-out to the finish.
Friesen went to the top of the speedway to try to get around Varin but to no avail as Varin was the first under the checkers. Pat Ward was able to get by Friesen to come home second. Friesen, Brett Hearn and Billy Decker rounded out the top-five.
