KIRKWOOD, NY - The first midweek racing program of the 2009 season took place at the Five Mile Point Speedway on Tuesday night.
Nick Petrilak won the 40 lap Race of Champions Dart Dirt Sportsman Tour event while Rich Talada won the 30 lap Trackside Products Race of Champions Dart Dirt Pure Stock Tour event and Bill Titus won the curfewed shortened 15 lap Colossal Cat Challenge I event.
Teammates Joey Colsten and Brian Decker led the 26 car field to green with Colsten taking lead over Kyle Weiss who was driving the Sportsman owned by Danny Creeden, Decker, Justin Holland, and Ryan Jordan in the $1,000 to win event.
Weiss who won the 100 lapper for Sportsman last fall at Five Mile Point took the lead on lap two while Decker took second and Jimmy Howard moved into fifth. Just before the first yellow of the race came out on lap five Decker rim rode past Weiss for the lead.
On the restart Weiss tried to slip under Decker for the lead but to no avail meanwhile behind them Howard moved into fourth and Jeff Crambo took fifth. After the next restart on lap nine Howard passed Holland for third.
On a lap-10 restart a major shuffling of the top five took place as Decker and Weiss battled side by side for the lead. Crambo moved into third putting Howard back to fourth and 15th place starting Nick Petrilak now moved into fifth.
Petrilak was now the man on the move as he took fourth on lap 12 and two laps later moved into third past Crambo who was beginning to suffer overheating woes.
Possible mechanical woes started to show up on the leader’s car on a lap 18 restart. It appeared that the Decker car was beginning to load up under yellow and when the green came out his car bogged down. With this happening the top five cars all bunched up and Weiss dove low coming out of turn four to get the lead. The lead was short lived as the yellow came out nullifying the pass as the lap wasn’t completed.
On the next restart Decker was able to keep his momentum up and maintain his lead. Meanwhile Weiss and Petrilak were battling for second side by side for ten consecutive laps until Petrilak found enough bite to take second on lap 34.
A restart with four laps to go found the Decker car once again having the loading up problem and this problem enabled Petrilak to get under Decker for the lead. The great run of Decker ended one lap later as he spun exiting turn two ending his strong run.
On the restart Petrilak jumped out to a big lead while Howard got past Weiss for second. Howard ran out of laps in his attempt to apply pressure on Petrilak for the lead as he fell a car length short at the checkers. Weiss settled for third with Holland rebounding back to finish fourth and Jordan came back to take fifth.
Qualifying races for the 39 car field saw heat wins go to Colsten, Weiss, Johnny Scarborough, and Kevin Jordan with consolation races being captured by Mike Nagel, Jr. and Matt Janczuk. Charlie Hendrickson, Jr. took the Five Mile Point Provisional and Anthony Perrego took the Accord provisional.
Jon Carpenter and Rich Talada led the 24 car starting field to green with Talada taking the lead over Bill Rampe, Carpenter, Buck Mills and Harold Humphrey.
Humphrey in his low slung car moved into third on a lap two restart and one lap later moved into second and immediately started to apply pressure on Talada for the lead.
Humphrey took the lead on a lap five restart with Darl Ellis, Jr. moving into third and Gene Sharpsteen into fourth. The top five would stay the same until lap nine when 12th place starter Charlie Gilbert moved into fifth.
The next 12 laps would see Humphrey increase his lead while a battle royale took place for positions second thru sixth featuring Talada, Ellis, Sharpsteen, Gilbert, and Rampe.
The impressive run of Humphrey ended on lap 22 as he blew the motor entering turn one. This handed the lead to Talada who now had to deal with veteran Sharpsteen who was on his back bumper.
The final seven laps saw Talada holding off every attempt made by Sharpsteen for the lead and that is the order they would stay as the checkers fell. Ellis held off a determined Charlie Gilbert for third while Carpenter made a late race rally to take fifth at the line.
Qualifying races for the 35 car field saw heat wins go to Carpenter, Earl Zimmer, Gilbert, and Humphrey with consi wins going to Mike Codington and Jason Butler.
The start of the scheduled 20 lap Colossal Cat Challenge I feature where the winner would receive the tenth place starting spot in the $10,000 to win Four Cylinder Enduro National at the Black Rock Speedway in November saw a heavy rash of yellow flag fever taking place.
After three tries to complete a lap the fourth try finally saw a lap completed with Tyler Harpell leading Bill Titus, Don Hollenbeck, Dan Smith, and Gary Kinne. Titus took the lead from Harpell on lap two with Kenny Underwood moving into the fifth on the same lap.
The next four laps saw five more yellow flags fly as many drivers were racing over their head and this caused the cautions. During the eighth yellow of the race on lap seven coupled with the Town of Kirkwood curfew the race was shortened to 15 laps.
Still the yellow flag fever continued and during all of this Titus maintained his lead over the 16 year old Harpell. With three laps to go the great run of Harpell ended as he was spun out entering turn three.
The final three laps were run off without a caution with Titus coming home the winner over Kinne, Josh Butler, Shawn Colwell, and Gene Wood.
Qualifying heat races for the 28 car field were captured by Underwood, Josh Butler, Frank Kennedy, and Kinne.
