VERNON, NY - Jeff Leslie won Sunday night's opener for the Race of Champions Dart Dirt Sportsman Tour at Utica-Rome Speedway.
Grant Hilfiger and Justin Holland led the 27 car strong Race of Champions Dart Dirt Series event with Hilfiger having the advantage for the four circuits. On the fourth circuit, Holland went around Hilfiger for the top spot as he was looking for his first ever Utica-Rome Speedway win and the $1,000 RoC payday.
While Holland was up front, sixth place starter Jeff Leslie was working on Hilfiger for the second spot and on the seventh lap, they made contact which made Hilfiger brush the front stretch wall which ended his competitive run.
Now in second, Leslie began to run down the leader Holland, and by lap eleven he had assumed the lead.
Once out front, Leslie checked out and left the rest of the field behind. With the event going from lap seven until the end caution free and Leslie well out front on his way to the big 30 lap win, Holland had to hold off Jason Rood for the second spot with Steve Way coming home in fourth and Bill Trexler Jr. in fifth.
Rounding out the top ten was Greg Doust, Jamie Batzel, John Scarborough, Jim Rothwell and Nick Petrilak.
